Meet Red, Our Australian Shepherd

By: Erin

This is Red.  He was born on our farm a month before we adopted Benjamin, so they have grown up together.  Red will be ten this year, but he acts like he's still in his prime!  He protects our farm from birds of prey by chasing them while they are still in the air.  The birds never dare land.  So far, we haven't lost any of our farm animals to predators because of our dogs.

Red's favorite thing to do is carry around sticks that are longer than he is and bring them to a spot under his favorite tree.  Then, he chews them up, or sometimes he will just "bury" them somewhere.  Once, while carrying around a four-five foot long branch, he almost knocked over a resident from a local assisted living facility during a field trip!

Red's life started off very exciting!  The day before Red was born, Rosie (his mother), had one large, dead puppy.  We thought this was it, but decided to wait a little longer, thinking there might be more.  Sure enough, almost 24 hours after the first puppy was born, Red and Blue entered the world!

Blue was taken by the breeder as her pick of the litter.  He likely ended up having one blue eye and one brown eye.  Blue is pictured above with our very patient cat, Marigold.

All the babies!

Red is Benjamin's special buddy.  They are only one month apart!

If he is able, Red always makes sure he is with us.

Red actually should have been sold, but we placed him at too high of a price (even though he was worth it) because of his pure bloodline.  Thus, we grew attached to him and by the time he was about eight months, we decided to take him off the "For Sale" page.  (And we're so thankful we did!)

"A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast:
but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel."
(Proverbs 12:10)
